In my personal styling class on Monday, Flore Martin, my styling teacher, has given the students an assignment to dress a 35 year old techie that lives in SF for work. A techie, for those who aren't sure what they are, is short for a technician, and are experts in technology.
Of course at first, I was thinking to myself, oh this would be easy, techies would probably dress in a jacket or a blazer with trousers and a button down shirt right? But then I thought to myself again--wait, maybe they don't dress like that... maybe they dress sort of casual with gadgets all over since they are techies...
I searched on Google for some pictures that a techie would wear at work, but all I got was just pictures of a techie would buy. Later, I did more research and read some more articles, and techies are not so simple as I thought they would be. They love being creative, having watches, interesting tee-shirts, and wearing awesome socks. That's what style they are different for... Here is an outfit that I paired for a "35 year old, techie at work in San Francisco"! Hopefully, this helps with a visual image.
So why are some of the prices so high compared to some other garments?
I thought for one, having a light blue denim button down (Club Monaco) would be a perfect investment, because denim button downs are never out of trend, people often wear it for casual and for semi formal, best of both worlds? I think yes.
A plain tee shirt (H&M) doesn't often have to be so high priced, and you can buy a ton with the low prices.
Jeans? (Nudie Jeans) We wear jeans every day, and this brand is especially made raw. What I mean by raw is that they have only been washed once with the dye and is stiff to wear at first, but will be shaped later on to how you wear them with creases of your everyday life. Put your wallet and cell phone in your pockets and you'll see the fades as months pass--but be careful not to wash them until after one year of wearing!
Shoes (Red Wing Shoes), we all need shoes, and shoes is another thing to invest in. Good shoes equals good life. Don't we all agree? You don't want to spend a ton of money on bad shoes and keep switching them out right?
We don't need different glasses (Garrett Leight California Optical) every day, so that is another perfect thing to invest in.
Socks. Socks. Socks (Happy Socks). Techies love different and colorful socks to express themselves. Not just only awesome teeshirts but with colorful socks.
Last but not least, a techie always needs something good on their wrist, and that is, a watch (Pebble). Not just any plain business looking watch, but something that expresses who they are and what they do.
